Will there be a snow day?
- An estimate from the public forecast. Your school district makes the call.
Why the sign says so
-
Snow
How many inches are forecast, against what your area usually handles.
-
Timing
Whether it falls overnight or stops early enough for plows to finish.
-
Ice
Freezing rain, which closes schools at far smaller amounts than snow.
-
Cold
The wind chill while children wait for the bus.
-
Wind
Gusts strong enough to drift snow back over cleared roads.
-
Alerts
Winter warnings and advisories from Environment Canada.
Set from your province when you check a postal code. Change it if you know your district better.

The chance school is closed or delayed, for any Canadian postal code: M5V in Toronto, or all six characters where towns lie far apart.

What is different for Canada
- The forecast source. The US National Weather Service stops at the border. Canadian forecasts come from Open-Meteo, which builds on Environment Canada's weather models.
- Units. Centimetres, millimetres, °C and km/h.
- Location. In a city the first three characters of the postal code are enough: they name a neighbourhood. Where they cover towns that are far apart, the calculator asks for all six and uses your own town.
- Alerts. Winter warnings, watches and advisories come from Environment Canada, not the National Weather Service.
- Ice. There is no ice-accumulation figure, so rain in hours forecast as freezing rain is counted as ice.
- Holidays. Canadian school holidays are skipped instead of American ones.
The method and its thresholds are otherwise the same. They are all on the How it works page.
Questions about Canada
Does the snow day calculator work in Canada?
Yes. Enter a Canadian postal code. In a city its first three characters are enough; in a rural area enter all six, so the forecast is for your own town. The forecast comes from Open-Meteo, which draws on Environment Canada's weather models, and the result reads in centimetres and °C.
Will there be a snow day tomorrow in Ontario?
Enter your postal code above or open the Ontario page for towns you can check in one tap. In much of Ontario the usual call is to cancel school buses while schools stay open, so read the closure figure as the chance of a bus cancellation or closure.
Does it read Environment Canada weather alerts?
Yes. Warnings, watches and advisories in force for your area on the school morning are read from Environment Canada and the strongest one adds to the chance: a blizzard warning the most, a snowfall or winter storm warning less. If Environment Canada does not answer, the Alerts row says so.
Which days does it skip in Canada?
Saturdays and Sundays, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving in October and December 24 to January 1. Professional activity days and March break differ by board and are not known to the calculator.
